August 26 is National Dog Day and it’s important to remember all canines who are in need of love and attention. The day was founded by Colleen Page as a way for the public to recognize the number of pups that need to be rescued each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.
There are so many ways to celebrate this wonderful National Dog Day! Here are just a few.
#1 – Spend time with your furry friend
One of the easiest ways to celebrate National Dog Day is by spending some quality time with your own dog. Maybe go to a local dog park or take an extra long walk. Whatever you end up doing, your pup will love it. It’s all about quality time.
#2 – Adopt – don’t shop
If you’ve been considering adding a pet to your family, take the plunge on August 26th and go to your local shelter to find your new best friend. You can save the life of two animals by bringing a dog home, the life of the dog you adopt and the life of the dog who takes his place at the shelter and also finds a new home.
#3 – Foster
Maybe adoptions isn’t the type of commitment you want to make right now. That’s completely fine, and there are other options! You could choose to foster. This means you will keep the dog in your home until they find their forever home. It requires less commitment, but many shelters depend on fosters to make room for other dogs in need.
#4 – Volunteer at a shelter
By spending just a few hours a month helping out at your local shelter, you can make a huge difference! You could help with the dogs or even just cleaning kennels. Here are some local shelters in Dallas and Austin: SPCA of Texas, Humane Society of Dallas County, Austin Pets Alive!, and Austin Humane Society.
#5 – Donate to a shelter
If you are able, donating to your shelter is a great way to help local canines. You can donate money or you could even go on a shopping trip to pick up blankets, towels, dog treats, dogs beds, and other items that shelters can always use.
#6 – Spread awareness
Spreading awareness is as easy as posting a status on your social media page. Let everyone know how important it is to appreciate and help man’s best friend.
No matter how busy you are, make sure to take time out on August 26th to celebrate dogs. They can really use your help.
