I currently have four incredible rescue dogs: Penelope, Dexter, Alexi and Oona (they are always willing to teach me new things and helping me hone my training skills) along with 3 tropical fish tanks.

I have been around animals my whole life. I grew up surrounded by cats and dogs, in the summers I would visit my grandparent’s farm eager to help out with the horses and cattle. I wanted to be Dr. Doolittle so I could talk to the animals.

What made you decide to become a dog trainer?

When I first rescued puppy Penelope. I was in over my head. She was out of control! I couldn’t move without her attacking me with those needle-like puppy teeth. She attached those teeth on everything I owned, my clothing, my glasses, my couch. She clawed doors and hardwood floors. She wouldn’t walk on a leash and she peed anywhere she pleased. I refused to give up on the little ball of energy and decided to enroll her in a basic manners puppy class. It was life changing!  I learned how to communicate with her and understand her behavior. Not only was she staying out of “trouble”, but our bond became even stronger. I realized she wasn’t a “bad” dog, she was just misunderstood.

I was so inspired by that realization that I decided to study everything I could about canine behavior. I wanted to know how dogs learn, how they communicate, and how they bond with us so deeply. I’m so passionate about strengthening the bond we as humans have with our dogs (or other animals) I want to help everyone learn how to communicate with their pets.

Angela G Dog TrainerWhat is the most rewarding part of being a dog trainer?

For me, the most rewarding part of being a dog trainer is getting the chance to interact with so many different dogs. I love being able to transform “problem” behaviors into positive behaviors with just a little canine communication, allowing them to live more harmoniously with their families. I live for that “ah ha” moment when they finally catch on to a cue or behavior I’m teaching.

Describe the following:

One or two of your most memorable experiences you’ve had when training a dog.

Every dog I’ve worked with has taught me a valuable lesson in one way or another. They all share a special place in my heart. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that no two dogs are alike- they all have unique personalities, experiences, and even learning styles. A training technique that works for one dog may not work for another dog…so I have to be adaptable, try something else and really tune in to the dog I’m working with

What is important to you as a trainer?

The most important thing for me as a trainer is considering physical and emotional wellbeing of the dog I’m working with. I want the dog to an active participant in training sessions, voluntarily offering behaviors because it’s rewarding, not because I’m forcing them to comply. Science based research has found when dogs voluntarily participate in their training, they learn cues quicker and retain what they’ve learned. Whether it’s training dogs to walk nicely on a leash or prepping them for a more relaxing vet or grooming visit, I am constantly making sure the dog is relaxed and having fun while learning. I work in harmony with the dogs I train, reinforcing good behavior and teaching alternatives or redirecting unwanted behaviors.

What would any of the dogs you have trained, say about you!!

Thank you for helping my human understand me….and for all the kisses!!

I have been training animals for 12 years and have loved every minute of it!  My initial path to dog training occurred way back in 2009 when I was still in college.  I wanted a part time job that allowed me to make money while working with animals, so I took on an apprenticeship with a local dog trainer.  Needless to say, I fell head over heels for training!

What is the most rewarding part of being a dog trainer?

In my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than watching a dog finally “get it”.  It makes all the patience and work worth it!  This is especially true for my clients with dogs that have behaviors so severe that they are close to rehoming/euthanasia.  There is no better feeling than knowing I helped save an animal’s life through training.

Describe the following:

One or two of your most memorable experiences you have had when training a dog.

One of my most memorable clients was a pit bull with severe separation anxiety.  He would literally destroy the home when left alone, and would break his way out of every crate/room he was put in.  His owners were about to take him back to the shelter but decided to call me instead!  It took about 3 months of training, but when they were finished with me, he was able to be home for 6-8 hours at a time ALONE, with no destruction!  I remember his mom was so happy she cried; it was an amazing feeling.

Emily Dog Trainer DallasWhat is important to you as a trainer?

My training philosophy is positive reinforcement and force-free.  This means I do not use corrective collars (such as shock or prong collars) and I do not believe in the completely disputed, yet oft referenced, “pack theory”.  There is no reason to ever “dominate” your dog!  I believe in building a mutual respect between dog and owner and have found that this type of training truly lasts and gets optimal results.

What would any of the dogs you have trained, say about you!!

I think the dogs I have trained would say “we love Emily, she always brings treats!”.  They would also probably say “that lady is so kind and patient with me and helps me work at my own pace, which makes me comfortable, and I appreciate that!”

Any pet(s) you currently own or have owned in the past (all types!).

Being surrounded by pets growing up, gave me some of the best memories with my family. Over the course of my twenty-three years I have had 4 dogs, 6 cats, 3 guinea pigs, 2 hamsters and 8 goats. All of them have helped shape who I am today and are the reasons I do what I do.

Your most memorable time with a pet you’ve owned or taken care of.

I loved getting my cat, Bella, with my boyfriend because he never had a cat growing up so he was always scared of them. The first day we brought her home, he was more scared of her than she was of us and he would not get close to her because he thought she would bite and scratch him instantly. The next day, they were cuddling on the couch and he tells me every day how thankful he is for her.

Why you became a pet sitter/dog walker!

I love animals: all shapes, sizes, breeds, and types. I have a cat who I adore, but I love dogs too and don’t have one of my own, so being able to love on other people’s dog is exactly what I enjoy doing. Being greeted with excitement and warmth every day by those fuzzy smiles definitely makes my day better.

Why do you love working with animals & how long have you worked with them?

I chose to be a vet tech because I am an animal lover and the warmth I feel from saving and caring for lives are well worth the sacrifices and hardships that come with the job. My love for animals has always been a constant thing in my life, so working with them every day is something I know I will always be passionate about.

All different types of pets you’ve worked with.

I grew up raising goats and always having a furry friend around. I used to horse-back ride, so I learned how to clean and take care of the farm animals as well. Constantly being surrounded by animals has taught me the responsibility of having pets as well as the unconditional love they bring every day.

What you think your pet(s) would say about you!!

I believe my pets would say I am compassionate and that I love taking care of others. The responsibility of raising pets and being around the constant love they give, shaped me into choosing to give back to animals every day.

Any pet(s) you currently own or have owned in the past (all types!).

I currently have 2 adorable rescue dogs – Mason  and Lane. Mason is a Schnorkie (Schnauzer Yorkie mix) we think about 8 years old. He had a particularly hard early life – being abandoned 3 times and escaping an abusive owner too until he found his forever home with us 6 years ago. He loves to chill in his bed or on the cool tiled floors, go for walks and eat (and eat some more!). Lane is a Shorkie (Shih Tzu Yorkie Mix) and is 5. We have had her since she was a 6 month old puppy and was running the house about 10 minutes after bringing her home…. She bosses everyone about!

Your most memorable time with a pet you’ve owned or taken care of.

Shorki loves to play ball and swim and her favorite game is racing me to the ball in the pool – she would give Michael Phelps a run for his money!

Why you became a pet sitter/dog walker!

I have always wanted to work with animals but my job has often got in the way. Now I have my own travel business I can schedule around working as a dog walker / pet sitter too!

Why do you love working with animals & how long have you worked with them?

In the past before I moved to the US from England I worked with the RSPCA fostering cats and dogs before they were rehomed. I adore all animals and think we humans can learn so much from them in how we approach every day with love and enthusiasm!

All different types of pets you’ve worked with.

I’ve also had Golden Retrievers, Jack Russell and Miniature Schnauzers, cats, bunnies and my first pet was a tortoise!

What you think your pet(s) would say about you!!

If my dogs could talk…. They would probably say:

Mason – Can I have another treat?

Lane – Let’s play ball!

And we love you!!!

Russell is a great addition to our Carrollton dog walkers!  He has a genuine love of animals and has volunteered for the RSPCA (in the UK) before moving to the US and here he has fostered dogs & cats & vetted homes to send them to.

Any pet(s) you currently own or have owned in the past (all types!).

Currently share my life with 2 cat ladies that love the sun and open windows, much like their favorite human, ie, me.

Your most memorable time with a pet you’ve owned or taken care of.

Visiting the home of a young family who let their pet rabbits roam free in their city back yard. Nature took over and I soon noticed that the number of rabbits -and holes- kept increasing exponentially!

Why you became a pet sitter/dog walker!

They are the only work colleagues that will settle down with a treat and TLC.

Why do you love working with animals & how long have you worked with them?

Hanging out with animals on a regular basis is a very sweet way to spend your days. Getting paid while in service to them, is a perk.

All different types of pets you’ve worked with.

All of them! Mammals and birds are obvious favorites, but lizards can have a popping personality!

What you think your pet(s) would say about you!!

“She understands me and makes me laugh!”.

VIP Pet Services is so glad to welcome back Pilar!!  She was originally with VIP over 10 years ago and was always a great sitter and had a genuine love of animals and taking care of them!  She has since been extremely busy building a business and brand and now has decided it’s a good time to come back and we are fortunate to have her back with us!!

Why you became a pet sitter/dog walker!

I become a pet sitter while deciding to go back to school and it has been so therapeutic for me! Getting to care for and learning the needs and personalities of each animal is so special. I love to make sure they are all beating cared just as I do with my own fur babies .

Why do you love working with animals?

Ever since I was little I have had a connection to animals and spent allot of my time with them, from watching neighbors and families pets, to spending time outside and trying to help strays and all different breads of animals. I couldn’t imagine life without animals in it.
