Beyond the daily joys of pet sitting and dog walking, the company has expanded its vision to address the broader challenges pets and their owners face in the community. This vision gave birth to Pet Sitters Care, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has grown to encompass vital projects like the new Pet Food Pantry and the innovative Rescue Markets culinary initiative.

Our commitment to pet welfare goes beyond providing high-quality pet services; it extends into the heart of our community involvement. Throughout the year, our dedicated team passionately engages in various activities to make a significant difference in the lives of pets and their owners. We understand that every small effort counts for pet charities, and our collective actions can lead to substantial change.

As a Texas pet sitting company that deeply cares about animal welfare, we’ve found unique and impactful ways to contribute to this cause. One of our innovative approaches is using the GPS dog walk tracking app Doggy Logs, which generously donates 1% of its revenue to pet charities each year. This collaboration aligns with our values and amplifies our ability to support those in need. As we embrace the spirit of giving this holiday season, we’re excited to donate to the following admirable pet charities:

Pets of the Homeless: This compassionate organization provides vital food and emergency veterinary care to pets of individuals experiencing homelessness, ensuring that these pets, often the only companions for their owners, receive the care they need.

Austin Pets Alive!: A leader in the no-kill movement, Austin Pets Alive! has been instrumental in saving thousands of cats and dogs from euthanasia. Their innovative programs cater to animals typically overlooked in shelters, making them a beacon of hope in the community.

Dogs On Deployment: Offering invaluable support to military members by providing care for their pets during deployments, they exemplify dedication to both pets and people who serve our country.

Mazie’s Mission: This nonprofit veterinary clinic serves only pets in the rescue system, focusing on underserved, homeless, and abused pets, showcasing an extraordinary commitment to animal welfare.

Feral Friends: Specializing in feline welfare, their TNR (trap/neuter return) program and adoption efforts for tame cats demonstrate their dedication to reducing feline overpopulation and ensuring every cat has a chance at a better life.

Maui Humane Society: With an impressive live release rate and innovative programs, they work tirelessly to protect and save the lives of Maui’s animals, making a profound impact on the island’s animal welfare.

10 Best Ways to Help Homeless Pets During the Holidays https://vippets.net/10-ways-to-help-homeless-pets-this-holiday-season/ https://vippets.net/10-ways-to-help-homeless-pets-this-holiday-season/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2023 21:22:22 +0000 https://vippets.net/?p=6478 The holiday season is a time of warmth, compassion, and giving. While we celebrate with our beloved pets at home, let’s not forget those who are less fortunate – homeless pets in shelters and rescues. As pet lovers, we can make a meaningful difference in their lives during this special time of year. Here are 10 heartwarming ways to help homeless pets this holiday season:

🐾 Donate to Local Shelters: Short on time, an easy way to help homeless pets for the holidays is to donate essential supplies like blankets, food, toys, and treats to your local animal shelters. These items provide comfort and enrichment to pets awaiting their forever homes. Check with your favorite rescue or shelter to see if they have an Amazon wish list, so you know exactly what they need most.

Cute yellow Lab puppy in Santa hat, Christmas tree in background🏠 Foster a Homeless Pet: Consider opening your home temporarily is a selfless way to help homeless pets over the holidays. Fostering helps animals experience the love and care of a family, making them more adoptable in the long run. Foster homes are often in short supply during the holiday season.

🐶🐱 Adopt a Homeless Pet: If you have room in your heart and home, adoption is the ultimate way to help homeless pets . You’ll give them the gift of a loving family and a forever home. The gift they give back is priceless.

Volunteer Your Time: Many shelters and rescues need extra hands during the holidays and volunteering is a great way to help homeless pets. Offer your time to walk dogs, socialize with cats, or help with administrative or cleaning tasks.

📢 Spread the Word: Use your social media platforms to raise awareness about homeless pets. Share adoption stories, post pictures of pets in need, and encourage your friends and family to consider adopting.

Thanksgiving Dinner to Go in Austin TX is one way to help homeless pets🦃 Purchase a Ready-to-Eat Thanksgiving Dinner: Help homeless pets while enjoying a delicious meal. If you’re in the Austin area, you can order a ready-to-eat Thanksgiving dinner through our nonprofit partners, Pet Sitters Care and Rescue Market.  Chef Irvin has crafted a menu that will delight your family and friends.  Your purchase directly contributes to the welfare of homeless pets. Pet Sitters Care is a 501(c)3 nonprofit animal welfare organization founded by VIP Pets own Robin Perdue. Proceeds from meal purchases are used to provide homeless people and their pets necessary food, supplies and veterinary care. Available in servings for 2 or servings for 6-12.

🍰 Host a Fundraiser: Organize a fundraiser in your community to collect funds for local shelters and rescues. You can host a bake sale, a charity run, or a silent auction to raise money as a way to help homeless pets. Check with your local shelters and rescues to see if you can donate baked goods or desserts for charity sales and auctions.

🧶Create DIY Pet Toys: Creating DIY pet toys is a wonderful way to channel your creativity and spread joy to shelter pets in need. With a little effort and imagination, you can craft homemade toys that not only keep these furry friends entertained but also provide them with much-needed mental and physical stimulation.

For Dogs: Braided Tug Ropes

Crafting braided tug ropes is a simple yet effective way to engage shelter dogs in interactive play. Start by collecting old t-shirts or pieces of fabric that you no longer need. Cut them into strips, ensuring they are long enough to braid together. You can use multiple colors to make the toy more visually appealing.

Once you have your strips ready, gather them and tie a knot at one end. Then, begin braiding the strips together tightly. If you want to add a personal touch, you can attach a jingle bell or a squeaker to the middle of the rope for added excitement. Knot the other end securely, and your DIY braided tug rope is ready to provide hours of fun for shelter dogs.

For Cats: Cardboard Scratchers

Cats love to scratch, and providing them with a homemade cardboard scratcher can help fulfill this natural instinct while keeping their claws healthy. To create a simple cardboard scratcher, you’ll need a few pieces of corrugated cardboard and some creativity.

Start by cutting the cardboard into smaller, manageable pieces. Then, stack the pieces on top of each other to create a sturdy base. You can shape the cardboard into various designs, such as a flat scratching board or a curved surface, depending on your preference.

To make the scratcher more appealing to felines, consider sprinkling some catnip on the surface or attaching small feathers or dangling strings to entice their playfulness. Place your DIY cardboard scratcher in the shelter’s cat area, and watch as the kitties enjoy sharpening their claws while having a blast.

These homemade pet toys are not only cost-effective but also eco-friendly, as they give new life to old materials. By creating DIY pet toys for shelter animals, you’re not only providing entertainment but also showing your commitment to their well-being. Your efforts can make a big difference in the lives of these pets as they await their forever homes.

🏷️Sponsor a Pet’s Adoption Fee: Many shelters offer adoption fee sponsorships. Consider covering the adoption fee for a homeless pet, making it easier for someone to give them a forever home.

🐾 Support Trap-Neuter-Return Programs: Help control the homeless pet population by supporting trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs for feral cats. These programs prevent the birth of more homeless kittens. Many TNR programs need extra food and shelters built during the cold months.

This holiday season, let’s unite as pet lovers and help homeless pets in Austin and Dallas. Whether through donations, volunteering, fostering, adoption, or any of the heartwarming ways mentioned above, every act of kindness brings these animals one step closer to finding the love, warmth, and family they deserve.

And as we embrace the spirit of giving, remember that your furry companions at home need care and attention during the holidays too. If you’re looking for trusted pet sitting services to ensure your pets are well taken care of while you celebrate, don’t hesitate to contact VIP Pets. Our dedicated team shares your love for pets and will be there to make sure your furry family members are safe and content during this festive season.

Together, let’s spread warmth and love to both homeless pets and our cherished companions at home, making this holiday season truly special for all.

The Best Homemade Pet Treat Recipes for Thanksgiving https://vippets.net/homemade-pet-treat-recipes/ https://vippets.net/homemade-pet-treat-recipes/#respond Thu, 19 Oct 2023 12:00:02 +0000 https://vippets.net/?p=1038 Thanksgiving is right around the corner! It is a time of family, friends, and giving thanks for the great many blessings in life. Show your dog or cat the ultimate gratitude by giving them a pet friendly Thanksgiving this year. Thanksgiving is more than just a human holiday, so as Dallas and Austin’s most experienced pet sitters, we’ve put together a list of homemade pet treat recipes.

It’s a time when we gather with family and friends to express our gratitude for life’s many blessings. And, for pet lovers, it’s also an incredible opportunity to show our beloved four-legged companions just how much we appreciate them with some homemade pet treat recipes. Type ‘homemade pet treat recipes’ into any search engine and you will be presented with MILLIONS of results. Plus, there are almost as many links for ‘dog or cat treat recipes’ out there as well! So where do you start?

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF MAKING HOMEMADE PET TREAT RECIPES

As you prepare the grand Thanksgiving feast for your human family, don’t forget to extend the love to your canine and feline family members. Just like us, our pets can relish some of the holiday’s delectable flavors. Here are some pet-friendly ingredients that your dogs can enjoy.

SAFE (IN MODERATION)

Man makes homemade pet treat recipes for his cat who watches onTurkey: The star of the Thanksgiving feast, cooked, boneless, and unseasoned turkey is a treat your dog will drool over. It’s packed with protein and a Thanksgiving essential. When sharing this tasty morsel with your dog, ensure it’s free of bones and seasonings to keep it safe for their consumption.

Pumpkin: This orange superfood isn’t just for pies. It’s loaded with fiber and vitamins, making it a healthy addition to your pet’s diet. Pumpkin can help with digestion and is often recommended for pets with tummy troubles. Whether served as a treat or mixed into their regular food, it’s a nutritional boost your pet will appreciate. Just beware that cinnamon and other seasonings in pumpkin dishes may not be safe.  Raw or unseasoned cooked pumpkin is best.

Sweet Potatoes: Rich in fiber and nutrients, mashed sweet potatoes are a delightful side dish that your dog will love. They provide a sweet and tasty addition to their meal, and the fiber in sweet potatoes can aid in digestion. Just remember to serve them plain, without added sugars or seasonings. Okay, maybe ONE marshmallow won’t hurt.

Green Beans: Crispy green beans are a low-calorie, high-fiber treat that’s great for your pup. Whether you’re looking for a crunchy snack or a healthy topper for their meal, green beans are a fantastic choice. They’re a source of vitamins and minerals and can help your dog feel full without excess calories. While green beans can be a staple in homemade pet treat recipes, hold the creamy soups and French fried onions, please.

Gravy: In moderation, plain turkey gravy without any seasonings is a special Thanksgiving delight for your pet. A drizzle of gravy can add a burst of flavor to their meal. However, it’s crucial to keep it plain, free from additives like onions or garlic, which can be harmful to pets. Sodium content is also a concern, as most gravy is loaded with salt. Too much can be harmful to your pet’s kidneys and lead to accidents when they drink more water to flush out the excess.

Cranberry Sauce: A small spoonful of cranberry sauce can add a burst of flavor to your pet’s meal. Cranberries are often used in pet foods, and in moderation, cranberry sauce can be a delightful addition to their Thanksgiving dinner. Ensure the sauce is free from xylitol and other harmful additives.

While sharing these tasty treats with your pets can enhance their holiday experience, it’s equally important to be aware of what not to share. Be sure and avoid the items in the list below, which can be harmful to your pets.

NEVER FEED THESE FOODS

NO Yeast Dough: Yeast can expand in their stomach and lead to gastric upset, causing discomfort and potential health issues.

NO Alcohol, Coffee, and Chocolate: These substances are toxic to pets and should be kept far away from them to ensure their safety.

NO Macadamia Nuts and Nutmeg: Best kept away from pets as they can cause various health issues, including neurological problems.

NO Avocado and Onion: These foods are toxic to both dogs and cats and should never be on their menu to prevent potentially serious health issues.

NO Grapes and Raisins: These fruits can be harmful to pets and should be strictly avoided, as they can lead to kidney problems.

NO Fatty Foods: While a bit of turkey is okay, too much fatty food can lead to pancreatitis in some pets, a condition that can be painful and severe. So, keep the skin off to avoid tummy troubles.

NO Sage: While a common Thanksgiving spice, it can cause stomach upset and even central nervous system depression in pets. So, it’s best to keep it out of their reach and safely stored away from curious paws.

This Thanksgiving, make sure to share the love with your pets while keeping their health and safety in mind. Now, let’s dive into some wonderful homemade pet treat recipes to make their holiday even more special. We spent way too much time scrolling Pinterest to find some of the best homemade pet treat recipes on the internet.

Here are some of our favorite homemade pet treat recipes from around the web:

HOMEMADE PET TREAT RECIPES FOR VIP PETS

PUMPKIN POOCH PLEASERS

The texture of “Pumpkin Pooch Pleasers” will be somewhat cake-like and slightly chewy, so don’t be surprised if a human mistakes them for dessert. These bars are designed to have a moist and soft interior, which makes them one of the best homemade pet treat recipes for senior dogs and puppies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin (make sure it’s pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 tablespoons carob powder (a dog-safe alternative to chocolate)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) baking pan or use a silicone mold for fun shapes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the canned pumpkin, unsweetened applesauce, and water. Mix well to create a smooth and creamy pumpkin base.
  3. In a separate microwave-safe bowl, melt the carob powder. You can do this by heating it in the microwave in 10-15 second increments until it becomes smooth. Carob is a dog-friendly alternative to chocolate.
  4. Add the melted carob to the pumpkin mixture and stir until it’s well incorporated. This will give your bars a hint of chocolate flavor.
  5. In another bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats to create your dry mixture.
  6. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the pumpkin and carob mixture until it forms a thick, sticky dough.
  7. Press the dough into your greased baking pan or silicone mold. Smooth it out so that it’s evenly distributed.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the bars are firm and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the bars to cool completely before removing them from the pan or mold.
  10. Once cooled, you can cut them into fun shapes using dog-themed cookie cutters, or simply into small squares.

6 Ways to Give Back During Be Kind to Animals Week https://vippets.net/6-ways-to-give-back-during-be-kind-to-animals-week/ https://vippets.net/6-ways-to-give-back-during-be-kind-to-animals-week/#respond Mon, 04 May 2015 12:31:32 +0000 https://vippets.net/?p=506 May 4th kicks off Be Kind to Animals Week! In addition to being extra kind to the animals in our lives (maybe an extra treat or two?) – it’s a perfect opportunity to do something kind for animals that don’t have families of their own.

Here are six ideas to get you started:

Donate

Donating is the easiest way to celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week. If you are passionate about animals but don’t have the time, donate to your favorite animal loving charity that will put your dollars to good use.

Adopt

Are you an animal lover at heart but never had your own pet? Take Be Kind to Animals Week as an opportunity to adopt a shelter pet. There are always pets in need of a furever home, and the kindest thing you can do is share yours.

Foster

Can’t commit to a specific animal long-term? How about short-term fostering? There are many shelters that run out of space but still need to give animals temporary homes. Fostering is a great way to be kind to animals without making a long-term commitment.

Volunteer

Love animals but can’t adopt or foster in your home? Consider volunteering your time at a local shelter. They always need the help, and you could give your love to an animal who desperately needs it.

Knit

Many animals are in need of blankets. A few years ago, there was a big demand for knitted sweaters to keep penguins who’d been the victims of oil spills warm. If you’ve got the skill, consider knitting clothes for animals who can’t stay warm alone.

Be Kind

Keep in mind that being kind is the only thing you have to do. Whether you have a pet, love animals from afar, or know someone who works with animals, there are many ways to show your kindness to the most vulnerable in our society. Be kind and you’ll get it back tenfold.

Keep the kindness going with a VIP Pet Sitter. We’ll keep your animals happy when you’re away from home. Contact us to learn more.

International Guide Dog Day – April 29th, 2015 https://vippets.net/international-guide-dog-day-april-29th-2015/ https://vippets.net/international-guide-dog-day-april-29th-2015/#respond Tue, 28 Apr 2015 13:04:35 +0000 https://vippets.net/?p=518 International Guide Dog Day takes place every year on the last Wednesday in April. It is a day that celebrates guide dogs and their vital position in assisting people who are visually impaired by keeping them safe while allowing them to have independence. This year, International Guide Dog Day takes place on the 29th of April.

Guide Dogs of Texas is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create freedom, mobility, and independence for blind and visually impaired Texans. Puppies are born at the facility through their in-house breeding program. Volunteers assist the breeding program by being Brood and Stud Holder volunteers, and Puppy Development volunteers.

These volunteers are much-needed in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Once training begins, it takes an average of two years to get a guide dog ready for service. Guide Dogs of Texas follow each guide dog team for as long as they are together.

Without volunteers, Guide Dogs of Texas would not be able to exist. There are many ways to volunteer such as on campus, in the community by being an ambassador, helping clients, and being a puppy raiser just to name a few. If you are unable to volunteer, donations are always accepted. There is a wish list on their website as well.

VIP Pet Services offers many services for your pet care needs from pet sitting to dog walking. We can even help with overnight care.  Contact us today to see how we can help take care of your fur baby.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

There are many reasons to celebrate the month of April, but none more important than the great strides made in the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect. April is officially the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. As a perfect compliment, April 11th is National Pet Day, established several years ago to help bring an end to the overpopulation of unwanted pets in the United States.

The ASPCA has been fighting animal cruelty in the United States since 1866. In our great state of Texas, animal cruelty, abuse and neglect are felonies. Dallas Animal Services enforces state statutes as well as city laws prohibiting animal abuse and abandonment.

What You Can Do

If you suspect animal neglect, please report it to 3-1-1 and if you witness animal cruelty, call 9-1-1. Please take part in this month-long celebration of the victories in the fight against animal cruelty and make sure to extend your efforts year-round. How are you going to help spread the word that animals deserve love and respect?

We have five suggestions on ways you can help.

1. Set a good example by adopting your next pet from a shelter, having all of your pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and teaching your dogs how to be Canine Good Citizens.

2. Become acquainted with your local animal services organizations before you may need them. In an emergency, you won’t want to waste any time trying to figure out who to contact.

3. Support your local humane society through donations of money, supplies or your time. Your local shelter would probably love to have you as a volunteer! Brighten the lives of shelter animals who haven’t found their forever homes yet by walking, playing, grooming or cuddling them.

4. Teach your children to love and respect animals. A volunteer job working with animals not only helps the animals but will also help your child develop into a better citizen and possibly guide their future career choice! Educate them on what Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month really means and how to detect and prevent abuse.

5. Be a guardian angel for the helpless animals you meet. Besides active abuse such as someone beating or torturing an animal, watch out for animals which are being neglected. These may include animals left chained outside without proper shelter; animals with filthy, matted coats; emaciated animals or animals left in vehicles in hot weather. Shade and adequate water are particularly important during our hot Texas summers.

These are just a few of the ways you can help spread the word to end animal cruelty. Contact us for all of your animal care needs and don’t forget to give extra snuggles on April 11th for National Pet Day!
